Celebrate National Hand Washing Week: A Simple Step to Stay Healthy
December 4, 2024
Clean hands save lives. That’s the core message of National Hand Washing Week, celebrated every December to highlight the importance of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of illness. It’s a small action with a big impact, especially during the cold and flu season.
Washing your hands properly is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect yourself and others from germs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, using soap and water, and scrubbing all parts of your hands, including between your fingers and under your nails.
When Should You Wash Your Hands?
- Before: Preparing food, eating, or treating a wound.
- After: Using the restroom, blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, or touching shared surfaces.
- Frequently: When caring for someone sick or after handling pets.
While soap and water are ideal, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is a good alternative when you're on the go.
At Jefferson County Health Center, we encourage everyone to make handwashing a regular part of their day. It’s a simple act that contributes to a healthier community.
This week, take a moment to brush up on your handwashing technique, share the message with friends and family, and make a commitment to consistent hand hygiene. Together, we can prevent the spread of germs and keep our community thriving.
