What is the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)?

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) advocates, informs, educates, and assists consumers on Medicare and related health insurance issues so they can make informed decisions and access resources to address their needs. SHIIP services are free, objective, and confidential. 

What do SHIIP volunteers do?

SHIIP volunteers assist thousands of Iowans like you understand their Medicare benefits and options through individual counseling sessions, community education, special projects, and making connections in their communities. 

How does SHIIP work?

Local organizations, like Jefferson County Health Center, partner with SHIIP to host trained volunteers who provide information, counseling, and education services. SHIIP is funded by a federal grant and by the State of Iowa Insurance Division. 

Where can I schedule a SHIIP consultation?

Can I volunteer with SHIIP?

Yes! SHIIP is always looking for more volunteers who are eager to help their communities. Volunteers will complete a training to learn about the program. We're looking for people who:

  • Like to learn about complex subjects
  • Have good computer skills and are internet savvy
  • Can work with diverse populations
  • Gain personal satisfaction from helping clients navigate Medicare
  • Can present themselves as a trusted and objective source of information
