Livestock Safety at the Fair
June 23, 2025
Fair week is an exciting time for families, 4-H members, and livestock exhibitors—but it’s also a time to be mindful of safety around animals. Whether you're showing animals or just visiting, it's important to remember that livestock are large, strong, and can be unpredictable in unfamiliar or noisy environments. Always ask permission before approaching or petting any animal and be sure to supervise children closely. Even well-trained animals can startle or react unexpectedly.
When handling livestock, exhibitors should wear closed-toe shoes, stay alert to the animal's movements, and keep calm and confident around them. Move slowly and avoid sudden gestures or loud noises that could spook the animal. Make sure gates and enclosures are secure, and always use proper halters, ropes, or lead equipment to maintain control. In the barn area, be cautious of crowded walkways and allow plenty of space between you and the animals.
Fair visitors should also practice good hygiene after visiting the livestock areas. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water—especially before eating or drinking. Young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems should be especially cautious, as some animal-borne illnesses can be transmitted to humans. With a little awareness and care, we can keep the fair safe and fun for everyone!
