Preventing Measles: The Power of the MMR Vaccine

The most effective way to prevent measles is through vaccination. The MMR vaccine—protecting against measles, mumps, and rubella—has transformed global public health by significantly reducing deaths and complications from these diseases.

How the MMR Vaccine Works
The MMR vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, meaning it contains weakened versions of the viruses that stimulate an immune response without causing the diseases. According to the CDC, two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles.

Recommended Vaccine Schedule

  • First dose: 12–15 months of age
  • Second dose: 4–6 years of age
Adults who are unsure of their vaccination status should talk to their healthcare provider, especially if they plan to travel internationally or work in healthcare or educational settings.

Is It Safe?
Yes. The MMR vaccine has been safely administered to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Common side effects are mild, such as fever or a mild rash. Serious side effects are extremely rare.
