Could it be Parkinson’s? Recognizing the Early Signs
April 1, 2025
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. It often develops slowly, and its symptoms can be different for everyone. Because the changes may appear gradually, it can be hard to tell if something is simply part of getting older—or a sign of something more.
Here are 10 early signs that could indicate Parkinson’s:
- Tremor
A slight shaking or tremor in your finger, thumb, hand, or chin when at rest can be one of the earliest signs.
- Small Handwriting (Micrographia)
You may notice your handwriting becoming smaller and more cramped over time.
- Loss of Smell
If you’re no longer able to smell certain foods or scents as well as you used to, it could be related to early Parkinson’s.
- Trouble Sleeping
Sudden movements, talking, or acting out dreams during sleep might be signs of REM sleep behavior disorder, which is linked to PD.
- Trouble Moving or Walking
You might feel stiffness or notice you don’t swing your arms as much when walking. Balance issues are also common.
- Constipation
While it can be caused by many things, frequent constipation that doesn’t improve may be an early sign of PD.
- A Soft or Low Voice
If people often ask you to speak up or say your voice sounds hoarse, it may be more than just a sore throat.
- Facial Masking
People may mention you seem serious, mad, or less expressive than usual—even when you feel fine.
- Dizziness or Fainting
Feeling lightheaded or fainting could be related to low blood pressure, which is sometimes linked to Parkinson’s.
- Stooping or Hunching Over
If you’ve developed a stooped or hunched posture, it might not just be bad posture—it could be an early sign of PD.
⚠️ Having one of these signs doesn’t mean you have Parkinson’s—but if you or a loved one notices several, it’s worth speaking with your healthcare provider. Call the JCHC Clinics at 641-472-4156 to schedule an appointment.
