Summer Kids Series: Ask A Nurse
July 15, 2025
Nurses play a big role in helping kids and families feel safe and cared for at the doctor’s office or hospital. They greet patients, ask questions, take vital signs, and assist with treatment. Most importantly, they’re experts at offering comfort and clear explanations when kids are nervous. Whether it’s a regular check-up or an emergency visit, nurses are there to guide you every step of the way. They make sure patients understand what’s happening and feel supported.
We asked some of our nurses to answer common kid questions, like “Why do nurses give shots?” The answer is that shots help protect your body from getting very sick in the future. When someone is hurt or sick, nurses help calm them down, clean wounds, and make sure they’re stable. They listen carefully, speak kindly, and work with doctors to find the best solution. Nurses are trained to act fast and keep everyone safe.
Nurses go to school for years and take special tests to earn their licenses. They learn about medicine, body systems, and how to care for people of all ages. Being a nurse takes both brain and heart—knowledge and compassion. At JCHC, our nurses love answering questions and helping kids feel brave. When kids see nurses as helpers, they’re more likely to ask for help when they need it.
