Back-to-School Vaccines: What Parents Need to Know

As you check off the school supply list and pack up the backpacks, don’t forget one of the most important items for the school year—vaccinations.

Vaccines protect your child from serious, sometimes life-threatening diseases, and are required by Iowa law for school entry. Making sure your child is up to date not only protects their health but also helps keep classmates and teachers safe.

Why Vaccines Matter

Vaccines teach your child’s immune system to recognize and fight certain germs, helping to prevent infections like measles, polio, whooping cough, and meningitis. These illnesses may seem rare, but outbreaks can—and do—happen, especially in school and childcare settings.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccines have helped reduce or eliminate many childhood diseases that were once common in the U.S. Staying on schedule keeps these protections strong.

Iowa’s School Vaccine Requirements

The Iowa Department of Public Health requires specific vaccines for children entering kindergarten, 7th grade, and 12th grade. Common required vaccines include:

  • DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis)
  • Polio
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis – booster)
  • Meningococcal

Additional Recommended Vaccines

In addition to required vaccines, the CDC and pediatricians recommend:

  • HPV vaccine starting at age 11–12 to protect against cancers caused by HPV
  • Flu shot every year for children 6 months and older
  • COVID-19 vaccine for eligible age groups, depending on current guidance
