Essential Sports Physicals for Iowa Student Athletes: What to Expect and How to Prepare

All Iowa student athletes must have a physical exam performed by a licensed healthcare provider. The Iowa High School Athletic Association mandates a preventive medical exam that goes beyond the basics to identify any potential health concerns.

What Happens During a Sports Physical?

During a sports physical, a healthcare provider will review medical history and conduct a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that a student athlete is in good health and fit to participate in sports. Here are the key areas assessed:

Cardiovascular Health: This involves a thorough examination of the heart and blood vessels. Providers check for conditions like hypertension, heart murmurs, or irregular heartbeats that might require further investigation or management.

Musculoskeletal System: We evaluate bones, muscles, and joints to identify any past injuries or conditions like scoliosis that could impact athletic performance or lead to injuries if not properly managed.

Respiratory Health: We assess lung function to detect issues such as asthma or other respiratory conditions that could be exacerbated by physical exertion.

Mental Health: We provide an opportunity to discuss any mental health concerns such as stress or anxiety, as these can impact an athlete’s performance.

Overall Health: We check nutritional status, fitness level, and growth patterns to ensure the student athlete is in optimal condition for sports activities.
