Jefferson County Health Center Proudly Supports ASPEN Malnutrition Awareness Week™
August 13, 2026
Jefferson County Health Center is proud to support ASPEN’s 2026 Malnutrition Awareness Week™, September 14–18, 2026. This national initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about malnutrition and promoting early identification, intervention, and treatment.
Malnutrition is a serious and often overlooked condition that can affect people of any age, size, or background. It occurs when the body does not receive the nutrients it needs to maintain healthy function. Malnutrition can occur even when someone appears to be eating enough and is especially common among people with chronic illnesses, hospitalized patients, and older adults.
Know the Signs of Malnutrition
Recognizing the warning signs of malnutrition can help individuals receive the care and support they need. Signs and symptoms may include:
- Unintended weight loss
- Loss of appetite or interest in eating
- Muscle weakness or fatigue
- Swelling or fluid retention
- Wounds that are slow to heal
- Changes in hair, skin, or nails
- Increased risk of infection
- Confusion, forgetfulness, or irritability
If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, talk with a healthcare provider. Identifying nutrition concerns early can help prevent complications and support better overall health.
Who Is Risk for Malnutrition?
While malnutrition can affect anyone, certain factors may increase the risk. Older adults, people living with chronic health conditions, individuals recovering from an illness or surgery, and those experiencing changes in appetite or difficulty eating may be more vulnerable.
Changes in health, medications, mobility, or access to nutritious foods can also affect a person's ability to meet their nutritional needs.
Take the First Step
As a supporter of Malnutrition Awareness Week™, JCHC is committed to increasing awareness and encouraging early intervention.
If you are concerned about your nutrition or the nutrition of a loved one, talk with your primary care provider. A healthcare professional can help identify potential concerns and determine whether additional nutrition support may be beneficial.
Early recognition and appropriate support can make an important difference in overall health, recovery, and quality of life.
