Type 2 Diabetes: One Diagnosis, Many Paths to Wellness

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes—and chances are, you know someone living with it. But while it’s common, every person’s experience with Type 2 diabetes is different, and so is the best way to manage it.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Unlike Type 1, which is an autoimmune condition, Type 2 diabetes develops gradually, often over several years. It happens when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t make enough of it. Many people may not even notice symptoms at first.

Managing Type 2 Diabetes

The great news is that Type 2 diabetes can be managed—and in some cases, reversed or put into remission.
Common approaches include:

  • Healthy eating and regular physical activity
  • Oral medications or non-insulin injections
  • Insulin therapy, if needed

But the key takeaway? Everyone is different. What works for one person might not work for another. That’s why it’s important to have a personalized care plan—one that meets your unique health needs, lifestyle, and goals.

At Jefferson County Health Center, our Diabetes Education Program, led by Amy Martin, RN, CDCES, provides personalized education, resources, and support. The program is certified by both the American Diabetes Association and the State of Iowa, and most insurance plans cover the service.
