What Is DSMES – And Why Is It So Important?

If you or a loved one is living with diabetes, there’s one resource you should absolutely know about: DSMES—Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support.

DSMES is more than just a class. It’s a personalized program that gives people with diabetes the tools, knowledge, and support to manage their condition with confidence. At Jefferson County Health Center, our ADA- and State of Iowa-certified program is led by Amy Martin, RN, CDCES, a diabetes nurse educator who brings both expertise and compassion to every visit.

Why does DSMES matter?

Research shows that people who participate in diabetes education have:

  • Improved blood sugar control
  • Lower risk of long-term complications
  • Better quality of life
  • Reduced healthcare costs

And most insurances help cover it! Typically, plans cover 10 hours of education the first year and 2 hours annually after that.

When should you use DSMES?

DSMES is helpful at any stage, but the American Diabetes Association recommends accessing it during four critical times:

  1. At diagnosis – to build a strong foundation right away
  2. Yearly – to stay on track with goals and check in on progress
  3. When medications or targets change – to adjust your routine safely
  4. During life transitions – such as changing providers, insurance, or your living situation

You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Let us help you live better with diabetes—one step at a time.
