Why Measles Cases Are Increasing and What You Can Do

Measles outbreaks are no longer a distant threat. In the first half of 2025, over 1,000 cases of measles were reported across the U.S., marking one of the highest yearly counts since its declared elimination in 2000.

Why Are Cases Increasing?
There are two major drivers:

  1. Falling Vaccination Rates – Misinformation and vaccine hesitancy have contributed to declining immunization rates, especially among children.
  2. International Travel – Travelers may bring the virus from regions where measles is still endemic, unintentionally sparking outbreaks at home.

The Role of Herd Immunity
To prevent widespread outbreaks, at least 95% of the population needs to be vaccinated to maintain herd immunity. When community vaccination rates fall below this threshold, it creates pockets of vulnerability where the virus can take hold and spread quickly.

What You Can Do

  • Ensure you and your family are fully vaccinated.
  • Stay informed through trusted sources like the CDC and WHO.
  • Support community health efforts to raise awareness and counter misinformation.
